In the early 1970s, a group of free-spirited rock climbers known as the Stonemasters had taken up residence at Yosemite National Park, pioneering a new way of climbing — fast, bold, and with serious style. One of them was Mike Graham. And when the gear available couldn't keep up with how they moved, he started making his own.
A Garage, a Pair of Pants, and a Revolution
In 1982, working out of his garage in Ventura, California, Mike Graham launched Gramicci — named after his own nickname, coined during a tongue-in-cheek attempt at the first "all-Italian" ascent of Half Dome. The brand's first product, the G-Pant, solved a problem no one else had bothered to address: climbing trousers that actually moved with the body.
The G-Pant's diamond-shaped gusset, integrated webbing belt, and relaxed fit gave climbers the freedom they needed on the rock. Word spread fast. Climbers wanted them. Then skaters. Then surfers. Then Tokyo.
From the Rock Face to the Streets
What makes Gramicci unusual is how genuinely it crossed over from technical outdoor gear to everyday culture — without ever chasing it. The same features that made the G-Pant work on a cliff face — the gusset, the relaxed cut, the durable fabric — made it effortlessly wearable off it.
Today, Gramicci sits at a rare intersection: trusted by climbers for its origins, embraced by streetwear culture for its laid-back aesthetic, and respected by anyone who values clothing built around movement. The brand is now based in Japan, where it has developed a devoted following, while staying rooted in the Yosemite spirit that started it all.
