Fjallraven Kaken backpack designed for school kids in1978 and become the number one iconic product of Sweden.

One day, a family of three customers visited our store, Outdoor Life, 02-20 Funan SG mall, City Hall, Singapore to look for the school bag for their kid. They asked " Do you have any school bag for kid", I replied, " Yes, we do". I bring them along while I was saying that to the wall where we put our Fjallraven Kanken bags. Both husband and wife said to me together that they are looking for a school Backpack.

Fjallraven was started in Sweden in the 1960s by Swedish adventurer Åke Nordin and Fjallraven Kanken backpack that we sell at Outdoor Life was originally designed for kids in 1978 to use as a school bag. Although it has become an iconic fashion bags among people, the true intention was to help the Swedish school kids with back pain which many of them were suffering back then because of the old design backpacks that they use in earlier days.

The sale of the first year was merely 400 units but the following year it has become very popular among people and sold over 30,000 units. For the past 40 years, it never changes the design and materials that they use. become one of the most popular backpacks in the world for both kids and adults.

What does really Kanken means? Kanken was coming from the Swedish word " Kanka" which means to carry something bulky and heavy easily i.e like luggage. Luggage is designed to carry heavy and bulky items easily. Therefore, the Kanken backpack was designed to carry something heavy and bulky at ease.

In the late 2000s, Fjallravan designed the smaller Kanken bags for smaller kids. Fjallraven Kanken backpack still remains the best seller product of the whole Fjallraven line-up. They also introduce the laptop series with padded shoulder strap and laptop compartment for nowadays requirements for school kids as things are getting heavier.

As you can see, it always has been designed for school bags and for school kids. It designed to last for generations. Some passed down their bags to their younger brother and sisters, from parents to their children, and even to their grandchildren. Both husband and wife are speechless. Their little boy was excited about his new school backpack. 

I leave them at the Fjallraven Kanken display area to give them their own time to think and decide. 

In my mind, I wish they get the Fjallraven Kanken laptop series backpack which is better for heavier load carry for their kid and the backpack become part of their family.
